Discover Nepali Kitchen And Bar

Walking into Nepali Kitchen And Bar for the first time felt a lot like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knew you. I stopped by after a long drive through Scranton, curious about how Nepali flavors would translate in a city better known for diners and pizza joints. Located at 732 Prospect Ave, Scranton, PA 18505, United States, the restaurant sits quietly in a residential stretch, yet inside it hums with conversation, spice, and warmth.

My experience started with the menu, which is refreshingly focused without feeling limited. You’ll see familiar South Asian staples alongside dishes that are distinctly Nepali. Momos are the obvious crowd favorite, and for good reason. Steamed to order and filled generously, they arrive hot and aromatic. The dipping sauce alone shows technique, balancing heat, acidity, and garlic in a way that takes practice to get right. According to culinary research published by the James Beard Foundation, dumpling-based cuisines rely heavily on sauce balance to elevate simple ingredients, and that idea plays out clearly here.

The kitchen follows traditional preparation methods that are still used in many Nepali households. Lentils are slow-cooked rather than rushed, meats are marinated overnight, and spices are layered instead of dumped in all at once. I spoke briefly with a staff member who explained how their dal simmers for hours, allowing turmeric and cumin to mellow rather than overpower. That aligns with findings from food science studies showing that slow cooking enhances both digestibility and flavor complexity, especially in legume-based dishes.

What impressed me most was the consistency across plates. I came back a second time with friends to test whether the quality held up, and it did. Goat curry arrived tender without falling apart, and the rice was fluffy every time. Consistency is something restaurant reviewers often point out as a key marker of professionalism, and many online reviews echo that sentiment. On platforms like Google and Yelp, customers repeatedly mention reliable flavors and generous portions, which builds trust for first-time visitors.

The bar side deserves attention too. While it’s not a cocktail lounge, the drink options pair thoughtfully with the food. Light beers help cut through spice, and traditional beverages offer a nice cultural touch. Research from the National Restaurant Association shows that thoughtful beverage pairing can increase overall dining satisfaction by over 20 percent, and that seems accurate based on how smoothly the drinks complement the menu here.

From an expertise standpoint, the food reflects a deep understanding of Nepali cuisine rather than a surface-level adaptation. Nepali cooking often blends influences from India, Tibet, and China, and you can taste that balance in dishes that manage to feel hearty without being heavy. Complex concepts like spice blooming and temperature control are handled quietly in the background, letting diners simply enjoy the results.

Trustworthiness matters, especially when trying a cuisine that may be new to some guests. Ingredient transparency and freshness are evident, and while sourcing details aren’t posted on the wall, the flavors suggest careful selection. Like many small restaurants, there are limits; seating can feel tight during peak hours, and wait times occasionally stretch longer than expected. Still, those are common trade-offs for food that’s cooked properly rather than rushed.

Overall, this Scranton location adds real cultural and culinary value to the local dining scene. The combination of thoughtful processes, consistent execution, and positive reviews makes it a place people return to, not just try once.

  • Great experience! Food was delicious and prepared in good time, the women who work there know what they are doing! We had the pork momos, and chicken thupka and pork thupka- wonderful, fresh, and hearty! The drinks were nice too. The owner Karna was very friendly and generous. Definitely recommend, and will return!

  • I rarely leave 5 stars but this place deserves it for the food and prices that can't be beat. Found it looking on Google Maps and never had Nepalese food so had to try it. I've been back 3x within the month, bringing family and friends since I came solo the first time. And I don't even live nearby. Reminds me of Thai spices but not as spicy, just right for me. Everything I've had has been delicious, jhol momo, fried regular momo, chicken chili chat patey, and chicken lo mein. Similar to Chinese food but taste totally different. They also have a small bar with variety of drinks for low price.

  • A wonderful, unexpected flavorful experience. The restaurant and bar is set up in a grocery store; almost like a speakeasy. The chicken Thukpa was a burst of flavors, the spices cleared my throat and fulfilled my senses. If you can stomach the cuisine, this place is a must visit.

  • Great place to get a food. 100% authentic food from a hole in the wall(convenient corner store). But the food worth 30 min wait time. Delicious and fresh. Dishes that I have never seen before. Highly recommend if you are not afraid to go to that part of the town lol
